English & Creative Writing

Course Description:

This course is designed to enhance students' writing abilities through a rigorous study of ​structure and style. Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing's Structure and Style for ​Students: Year 1, Level C as a foundation, students will develop a strong command of the ​English language while exploring their creative potential. Through a combination of ​instruction, practice, and feedback, students will learn to write clearly, effectively, and ​persuasively. The course will focus on building a strong foundation in grammar, syntax, and ​vocabulary. Students will learn to analyze and imitate various writing styles, developing ​their own unique voice. Additionally, they will explore different genres, including narrative, ​persuasive, and expository writing, as well as creative writing forms such as poetry and ​short stories. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to ​communicate ideas effectively both in writing and through oral presentations. Students will ​engage in a variety of writing assignments, including essays, research papers, and creative ​pieces. Through peer review and teacher feedback, students will learn to revise and edit ​their work for clarity, coherence, and style. This course is designed to prepare students for ​success in college-level writing and beyond.

September: 4, 11, 18, 25

October: 2, 9, 23, 30

November: 6, 13, 20

*Tuesday classes will be a 12 week course, while Wednesday classes will be 11 weeks.

12 Week Breakdown:

  • 1st Month - Review the fundamentals of grammar and sentence structure, introduction ​to the writing process, study of different types of sentences, and practice writing clear ​and concise sentences
  • 2nd Month - Delve into paragraph structure, practice writing effective paragraphs, study ​of different paragraph patterns, analyze model paragraphs, and write various types of ​paragraphs
  • 3rd Month - Explore essay structure, practice writing different types of essays, research ​and citation (MLA or APA format), peer review and revision of essays, and final essay ​project

Tuition Per Semester: Tuesdays - $360 or $415 textbooks included or Wednesdays - $330​ or $385 textbooks included​

Required Textbooks: Structure and Style for Students: Year 1 Level C and Fix It! Grammar:​ Frog Prince, Student Book Level 5​

Time: Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Homework: Students will have weekly homework assignment including reading literature, ​projects, essays, and preparing for class quizzes and tests.

Note: Students will be graded upon class participation and weekly homework. Students ​will be required to purchase their own textbooks if not purchased in the tuition amount.
